Amazon Best Sellers Rank:

This is one of the lightest RPG of any LitRPG novels I think I’ve ever read.Essentially, the novel takes the same premise that Critical Failures does, a DM that transports the players to the game world, but leans more towards traditional fantasy. There’s an older series that isn’t LitRPG called Guardians of the Flame that this reminds me of that does something similar. The game mechanics in the story are heavily front loaded. Before being transported to the game world, everyone sitting at the game table makes their characters and you get details about how stats, abilities, races, and classes work. Everyone describes their characters and what rolls they made and what they chose for their classes. After the 9% mark, the players are trapped in the game.In the game world, there are no character sheets, no notifications, no item descriptions, no spell or ability descriptions from pop ups. Instead, additional game mechanics are explained by the players talking to each other or as someone thinking about them. The world and actions of the characters around the players are described strictly as fantasy. Though their behaviors seem to still follow any game rules established. Ie: the hot girl in the group having a high appearance score being treated a lot better than the half goblin with low charisma. Or the gnome healer missing a lot of his attacks because he has a low attack score relative to the fighter classes. Another drawback is that no one in the group levels or ranks up in this novel. I messaged the author and he confirmed that won’t happen till book 2. So that even that RPG feeling of progression isn’t hit in this one. The author also messaged me saying in book 2, the character dream their character sheets to make changes when they level. The story itself, felt like a decent table top adventure and dungeon crawl. The group has a goal, of earning enough money to afford a resurrection spell to bring back a group member. All their adventures in town or in the dungeon work to further that goal. Ultimately, things feel like they often come down to a die roll, for good or ill. None of that is shown or referenced but that’s the overall impression I got. But despite that vibe, much of the story is delivered like a fantasy story. Which is what the author has written in the past.Overall, the story just didn’t do it for me. The decision to minimize and mute the mechanics honestly made the story less interesting. It might be a plus for other readers but one of the big things I love about litRPG is that there’s a freedom to put all the UI and notification information that gamers and tabletop players are used to seeing in the story. It’s one of the ways they relate to LitRPG, seeing the same stuff they see while gaming. You might enjoy the story if you don’t like notifications or character sheets in your LitRPG story.Score: 6 out of 10

I really liked this story, as it is the first in a series, it was a little slow in the beginning, to introduce the reader to the characters. you have to suspend a lot of belief to accept the method of transfer into the Magical relm, but I have read worse.once you get past that, it is not a bad story, I am not familiar with the playing system that the characters are supposed to be using, bit is seemed consistent. our intrepid party are all fish out of water, trying to cope in this new world. early on, one of the party dies, but that is not always a permanent condition in a world that has magic, and most of the story revolves on getting their companion back among the living. there is a lot of interesting byplay between the different members or the party. in spite of the few things I mentioned above, this story sets a firm foundation for the rest of the series, which is on the way. If you can forgive the slow start, and power on, this is a fun story, one that shows a lot of promise. I know that I liked it, and I will be getting the next book when it gets out.

At first I wasn't sure whether I was going to finish it, as the continual reference to Stephi's overly large breasts (the description was "two throw pillows", which certainly didn't evoke any clear image for me) was irritating. As such I was prepared to plod through the story, convinced i was going to dislike it. On the contrary, the author managed to generate a story that kept my interest. Further, there was more plot than then usual stats and pop-up screens that take up so much of other RPG novels. While I'm not averse to stats, et al., I'd rather be told a story than bogged down in character point assignments, etc.

I've never role played (I played a light MMORPG, but that was it) or read a lit RPG book before, so I didn't really know what to expect when I bought this book. There is some role-play talk in this book, and by that I mean terms and concepts familiar to role players that the rest of us might not know; my knowledge of a few of these terms and concepts helped me understand this book, I think, but the ones I didn't know never made me feel lost. This is of course a lit RPG book, so I actually enjoyed reading new concepts and *gasp!* learning! The characters have very different personalities from each other, which helps them to be both likable and memorable. I feel like the personalities were all a little exaggerated, but instead of detracting from the book, the exaggerations added to it and made the book and characters that much more enjoyable. A really fun aspect of this story is that the personalities are affected by the characters' new identities. For example, there are several times in the book when Glenn knows he would normally act one way, yet is unable to because of the specie he was turned into and the rules of the game for that specie.Their first quest starts within minutes of being sucked into the game and was serious enough to make me root for them and worry about their success. For those of you who know there are to be more books in this series, rest assured that while this book isn't a stand alone, it DOES have the ending to their first quest. All in all I'd say this book is a great stepping stone for those of us who love fantasy and want to dip our toes into lit RPG as well. I'm looking forward to reading the next book in the series!

Transported I to another world during a RPG the characters struggle to come to terms with their new world and figure out how to get home. It reminded me of The Guardians of the Flame by Joel Rosenberg or the D&D cartoon. Looking forward to the sequel

Great read. The story follows along the lines of SAO (Sword Art Online) but is completely different. The level of detail of describing the world they are trapped in and the character's personality is outstanding. This book is hard to put down once you start reading.
