There are many other accounts written of this most-significant and celebrated time in baseball playoff history, including those I'm unfamiliar with, but "Don't Let Us Win Tonight" has got to be the perfect-game version. Taking the reader thru all games of BOTH playoff series (Angels, Yankees) then the Series versus the Cardinals, in an almost diary-like format. We're told the significant situations in sequence, followed by key participants' recounts in their own words, in a story plot which is none-the-less fascinating even though we know the final outcome. For instance, close to 5 pages back and forth about the infamous "swatted ball" caper in ALCS Game 6, with comments from players, coaches, umpires, even the batboy. This book gives you Everybody, on both sides, at each critical time.Relive the entire Red Sox postseason via the words of the participants themselves. Then, after the current season is completed, take this book out & relive again. Each time you'll find something probably unnoticed before.
Yes, I'm afraid it has. It has now been 10 years since that great and wonderous night in 2004 when our beloved Red Sox took that 4th straight from the Yanks and then blew through those poor Cardinals who just didn't know what hit them. It was History they ran into not the Boston Red Sox and History cannot be stopped. This book, from the inside and outside of that journey, retraces that wonderful trip for us one more time and I highly recommend it for all Red Sox fans and any baseball fan in general who see the pertinance of this series (both of them) and what they meant to baseball, Boston, Boston fans, fans in general and fans of sports history. 10 years ago? Injoy the memories, for these are the good old times and as any Red Sox fan will tell you, life just doesn't give out that many good ones to enjoy. On or off the field. So kick back and let yourself enjoy one of those good ol' days again with this book.
“Don’t Let Us Win Tonight†is a fluent, fun, fly-on-the-wall recollection from players, coaches, coaches and even batboys. Even though it may seem trite, I think one of my favorite quotes was from Bill Mueller: “The best part about winning is it will be dissected so you understand that all the pieces came together to make a whole championship. It was an entire staff, an entire bullpen, an entire lineup, the guys that can steal bases, the fourth outfielder, the pinch-hitters, the guys playing every inning. All the guys understood their roles and were, at the right time, the best at their role. And it was good judgment on the part of the front office and Theo and Tito for having the confidence and getting those guys in the locker room.…â€
This excellent book is now nostalgic. It's been quite a while since those 2004 Sox broke the Curse of the Bambino. As a Sox fan, it was great to relive those times. The book is told by players, front-office people, coaches, the manager--it's completely their story. It also focuses particularly on the American League Championship Series--the one where the Sox got down 3 games to 0 against their principle rivals, the New York Yankees. It was one of the great postseason series in history, and the only time a team has come back from 3-0 in baseball history. The World Series, at least in this book, was anti-climatic. I don't remember it being that way in 2004, but it is here. The 2004 postseason was so sweet, and this book allows the fan to relive the whole thing in vivid detail. A joyful ride!
The best anniversary account of the Red Sox's curse-breaking 2004 postseason, by far! Only 5 stars doesn't do it justice. This was a trip back to 2004, having the foresight to carry one eagerly thru the brutal first 3 games of the ALCS to the coming redemption and triumph. Masterful writing and editing to tell, relive the story thru the eyes of the Red Sox themselves. Reading this, I was there again, this time at Fenway, instead of in front of the TV.If any real Sawx fan hasn't a copy yet, the holidays are coming fast...
Red Sox fans will not soon forget the magic of the 2004 season, which saw Boston end an 86 year championship drought. Wood's book dives into the details from the perspective of the players, the coaches, and others who helped "reverse the curse." It's a unique and enjoyable read that will not disappoint. I highly recommend that you add this to your library of baseball books.
If you love baseball, you will love this book. The authors have recreated the 2004 post season in a gripping and extremely readable way. Usually I get bored with descriptions of baseball games, even though I love watching baseball. But Allan Wood has used a combination of clear, precise and concise writing and a mixture of quotes from the players, managers, coaches, even batboys to bring to life what was going through the minds of the players and management as these games were unfolding. The chapter that described Game 4 of the ALCS made my heart pound---even though I knew exactly what was going to happen from watching those games 10 years ago.
This is the story of the 2004 playoffs that ended with the Red Sox winning their first World Series since 1918. The story is told in the words of the players and other people involved, from a batboy to Bill James, themselves. The authors did dozens of new interviews for the book. Excepts from interviews are framed by concise, exciting descriptions that cover every game of the ALDS, ALCS, and World Series.By using the players' own words, it captures the tension and emotions of that historic playoff run. It's filled with fascinating detail - about the events and characters, baseball, and the psychology of sports at the highest level - but it's also a load of fun for a fan who wants to re-live the experience.
