Great book with insightful guides that will assist you in any conversation. Have you ever wondered why people don't understand your point, or take offense at your words? These authors break down the subtle, hidden meanings of words and phrases that we take for granted. We often have a thought in our own minds and assume that everyone else will understand our intent. However, WORDS MATTER!!! This small, and very readable book sheds light on how to get the most out of your words, and how to ensure that you are sending the message you intend. It also gives you ideas for determining whether information you are reading is missing relevant and important facts that would make it more clear, or more balanced. This prevents you from believing everything you read, and helps you to become a more critical reader.
I used this book as a textbook for an undergraduate introductory philosophy course with a Critical Thinking component - I was asked to put the course together at the last minute, and was searching for a textbook that was not prohibitively expensive. Unfortunately, the under-handed tactics of modern academic publishers make it so that it is nearly impossible to review the contents of any of these kinds of textbooks before purchasing them. Had I been able to do so, I would not have purchased the book because it displays one major shortcoming, namely, the lack of any discussion on the formation of arguments - inductive and deductive reasoning, syllogisms, premises, soundness/validity, etc. That said, the textbook was useful to some extent, although I think the attempt to present current and "hip" examples drawn from popular culture borders on pandering. It did include some good and accessible discussions of the value of critical thinking, as well as information on how to evaluate certain kinds of propositions and statements with a critical eye. And, the exercises included within did provoke some thoughtful responses from my students. However, due mainly to the aforementioned omission, I will not be using this book again. I would consider it more appropriate for high-school students than for college undergraduates.
This book is the strongest introduction to critical thinking I have read so far. And by "strongest" I mean it teaches you critical thinking in a step-by-step process where you will be introduced to each topic of critical thinking one at a time with precision & clarity. And the approach the authors use is unique! Where it's centralized around asking key and important questions that would shed light on the dark spots of arguments.It begins by explaining the benefits of being a critical thinker (Chapter 1.)Then, it takes you to how to be a critical thinker and what are the attitudes of a critical thinker, it's more of the common-sense of critical thinkers (Chapter 2.)After that, you will be introduced to the most basic elements of critical thinking and argument-analysis: The Issue and Conclusion (Chapter 3)Next, is also another step of analysis which is concerned about the Reasons supporting the argument (Chapter 4)Now, after having the structure of arguments analyzed you will be spotting influential elements in the argument that would play key roles in persuading you... Such elements are like the use and abuse of ambiguity (Chapter 5) and it's other sisters - the Assumptions and unstated beliefs the arguer hides behind their arguments (Chapter 6)Reaching chapter 6 means the end of analysis and the start of evaluation of arguments... You will do your first evaluation of soundness and validity of arguments by spotting the tricks and ploys the author induces between the lines, these are called FALLACIES (Chapter 7)The following 3 steps are concerned with evaluating the truth & validity of the evidence supporting the reasons of argument (Chapter 8 + 9 + 10)After that the journey of evaluation will start to take an explore-and-conquer approach... hehehe... "Chapter 11" is concerned with the soundness of the provided statistics as evidence!Where "Chapter 12" is concerned with the important information that have been omitted by the arguer and if it would influence the minds of people and listeners."Chapter 13" explores the possibilities of deriving new conclusions and judgments other than the one(s) inferred by the arguer himself.The journey reaches the end as the authors of the book discuss with you some obstacles to critical thinking and how it's important to avoid them and even conquer them if possible, such obstacles will function as barriers to stop you from developing your skills of being a critical thinker.--- Bottom line, get this book! It's serious business!
Did the authors use a proofreader? Tons of misspelled words. Very elementary for a college level critical thinking course. Not well written. I ended up using Google for my class more than this book.
Literally, the beginning of the book (page 2!) discusses thinking for oneself and not giving into persuasion, simultaneously giving the reader political opinions in an attempt to subversively persuade your way of thinking. To be expected for a liberal course, I suppose. Particularly useful for younger college students that haven't lived long enough through no fault of their own to form personal or career relationships that require a great amount of compromise and multi-faceted decision making.
This book is very information and very well written. I had to read this for a class I was taking but was engaged every minute of it. Definitely a great read to help improve ones critical thinking/leadership skills.
Overall a great read and I would recommend this book to anyone that wants to better their communication skills.
This was needed for a University course on how to view our own image as others may see it. Well written book and I would tell others of this anytime they may need a second opinion.
