The book is well written and informative. David Pogue has done an excellent job; however, O'reilly has fallen down on their part of the bargain!I've given three stars because I bought this book as a teaching tool for Senior Citizens at our local Senior Activity Center. I would have encouraged them to buy the book; however, at this time, I cannot . . .In the back of the book, I find the following:"THE MISSING CD - There's no CD with this book - you just saved $5.00!:Instead every single web address, practice file, and piece of downloadable software mentioned in this book is available at missingmanuals.com (click the Missing CD icon). There you'll find a tidy list of links, organized by chapter."THE MISSING CD is truly missing! I followed the link to get the information I was promised, and it is nonexistent! I can find information on the 1st Edition, but there is nothing for the 2nd Edition!Until O'reilly gets their act together and delivers what they promised, I cannot recommend this book for anyone other than gurus.
This Edition states that Windows Live Mail works well with Windows 10 and can be downloaded from a site noted on the Internet "disk" site. However the link doesn't work and Live Mail was discontinued in 2017. There seems to be no site that provides a download for Live Mail.
I received the Kindle version five days ago so have only read a couple of hundred pages. I have been reading The Missing Manual series for years and for about every piece of software that I intend to use with any frequency. This book appears to be up to the usual standards with more breadth and depth of detail than most of us will ever need. There is a wealth of information a wide subject area in the footnotes.
None of the promised online downloads are available. The publisher didn't even know they were missing. Came back and said "probably in months". Maybe intentional, but the book reads like it was commissioned by MS. Too much praise for windows, too little criticism of the OS, problems, and security issues. I had hoped to find a fix for a number of things that do not work in W10 (for me and many others on the www tech. sites.) No mention of the problems, just a description of how things should work.On the other hand, I cannot point to a better book on W10. There is a lot of detail on how it works and it is worth the money. Most of the problems could be fixed online. Provide the DLs and do a good errata. (Although O'Reilly says they do not support errata anymore. Huh.)
David Pogue's "missing manuals" are very valuable aids to using the very complex operating systems on today's home nd office computers. This latest edition has updates on the features in the 2018 update. It has helped me set up ways to track the goings-on in Windows and display them in a concise form. To get your money's worth out of Windows 10, you absolutely need this book.
Each and every time a new version of Windows comes out I order this book. Pogue is an excellent technical writer.
The author doesn’t assume you know, and clearly defines instructions.
The main problems with this book are the illustrations. Most of them are impossible to read since the font is way too small. Using a magnifying glass helps, but it is still very hard to read, and it is a real nuisance to use. This book contains more information than needed, such as telling the reader three or four different ways to do the same thing. Perhaps the book is OK for real geek professionals.
