Just finished the book and am a little bummed I won't get to hang out with Don and his family anymore. Mysteries are my preferred genre so I can usually solve the whodunit before the end. I missed the mark on this one. Well written and the character development was the driving force of moving the reader along. I rate novels by how well the characters stick with me during the day when I'm not nose-deep in the book. This got 5 stars from me.
This books not only represents a great murder mystery, it conveys the view point and life of a gay man's road to becoming who he was meant to be. Through the story, we grow with Don Esker as he finds his own truth by uncovering the truth of a series of murders. Bud Gundy's writing paints a vivid picture of life growing up in the 70s for gay men in rural towns.Such a great work, from a great author!
The book takes one on a descriptive suspense journey through time in which most of us grew up. Sibling rivalry, neighbors, parents and authorities are just a few of the cast of characters Bud Gundy spotlights and almost examines as we would if given the chance to go back in time. He makes it seem effortless and comfortable and thus this mystery novel invites the reader to join the cast.In short, entertaining and stimulating!
Riveting, captivating an a real page-turner from beginning to end. I enjoyed taking the trip through time with so many elements of a classic murder mystery.
Gripping page turner - and beautifully written. I think what I liked best is the depth of the characters - his characterization of the complex psychology of his protagonist gives an already intriguing story line additional puch. I read it from start to finish in one sitting - truly couldn't put it down!
I usually just read on the bus commute to work. However, this book was so captivating, I spent the weekend binge-reading until I finished the book.A wonderful book from a gifted author. I can't wait to read what he writes next.

This is the kind of book that will keep you on the edge of your seat the whole time. Wondering who, where, why, and what???My heart not only broke for Don, but for his dad, his brother, Rich, his mom, and his other two brothers.There are so many twists and turns this book takes you on. You think you have it figured out and then wham! another fact comes up that makes you think otherwise.There was a part that actually made me put the book down, because I just didn’t know if I could read it. I was heart-racingly nervous about what was going to happen. Then there were the parts with Rich, that just broke me. One of the most heart-aching scenes for me was with Rich and Don. My heart still hurts thinking about it.Then you bring in Bruce and he is just the right person Don needed in his life. And at the right time.It has been a few days and I’m still thinking about how this book devoured ME while I was reading it.You definitely want to have a day dedicated to reading when you pick this one up. You will not be able to put it down.
