Earlier this summer, at my 50th high school reunion (yikes!) , I was part of a conversation about, "What has been the biggest change, you've seen?" The hands down winner was not the internet, but the incredible change in public attitudes about sexual orientation, roles and rights. And the next question was, "How could everything have changed so fast,?" which did seem a genuine puzzle."Sex and the Constitution" provides a most insightful account of how that momentous change happened and where it might be going. It very skillfully tells the tale of the interaction between culture, courts and politics that defined a new set of rights that even as a non-lawyer, I have a much better sense of how we got here.Other reviewers have noted that the book is much more than this - and indeed, although the focus is on American institutions, it is a focused history - sex in the western world...beginning with those 4th century BC Greeks.. with original perspectives on all the CHristian writers, even the ones I thought I knew. A fantastic amount of book for the money.
Don't let the book's length put you off. Every page is interesting, clearly written and makes you want to keep on reading. What a good writer Geoffrey Stone is! And the subject, of course, is fascinating, especially in its evolutionary mixture of sex and religion. You'll learn more than you thought you needed to know, and get some important legal and illegal sex education. My book club loved it, and did we have a lot to talk about!
Excellent coverage of the relations between law and sexual mores. The long view is provided going back into the history of the western world. The coverage of court cases and U.S. Supreme Court cases related to all matters with sexual implications is a good study of constitutional history. It is eye-opening to see how general attitudes have changed several times during the history of the U.S. and the development of social attitudes by religious forces. Specific cases, personalities and anecdotes make this book highly readable while teaching much about the crafting of constitutional principles.

I think the book's title is too narrow for the content. This book is really about History, Religion and Gender issues. It is extremely well written and reads more like a novel.
This book makes clear how fragile and almost accidental so much of our progress really is. As has been said "The Constitution is what the Supreme Court says it is" and this books shows how often that has been a 5 to 4 decision. New Court, New Law?
fascinating account of how far apart the bible and reality are from each other. real life during the biblical writing was a sex fest with no laws against sexual freedom. those were put on christians in the 5th century and later by men whose sexual options had run out.
