I was so excited to order the latest edtion of the Handbook of Qualitative Research. Earlier version have been like a bible to me and my PhD students. This edition is less than half the size but about the same price so not good value for money. Futher, I went straight to action research and found that chapter which had previously been so strong now makes all kinds of assumptions and does not lay out the core basic knowledge that new researchers need. It is as if the authors are talking only to experts and they are the people least likely to need a book as good as Denzin and Lincoln can produce. I feel 'burned' and I'll be very wary of buying another edition.
Hi.It's a very good book for people who have a misconception on qualitative analysis. It gives a good classification of the different types of qualitative analysis so readers can have a full pictures of what they are all about of their past, present, and future, the merits, deficiencies, and functions of each type of qualitative analysis.It is definitely a very valuable book especially when this field is growing so fast that people will easily get lost of what they are all about.The book is value for money. It is worth to own a copy as the binding is in hardcover that make it more durable even under frequency reading or reference searching. At first, I hesitate whether to bought it or not fearing that it will soon be outdated and no bookshelf space to put. However, after detail reading of the various articles, I find that majority of them have values that can stand against the test of time. If these articles have to be taken out due to new ideas coming out in the future version, I think readers still have to refer to them otherwise their understanding to this field will be incomplete.I think if you read all the articles in it. It will benefit you for life in all kind of professions.Patrick from Hong Kong.
The Sage books are usually wonderful, especially for students, but this book contained articles that were not useful to me. Our class purchased it then changed books because even the instructor disliked it. If you have to buy it for a class, you have to buy it, but I would not recommend it otherwise.
I hope SAGE re-publishes the 3rd edition. The 4th edition is such a disappointment. I used the 3rd edition as a prescribed text in a research methods course that I teach. I was compelled by university requirements to replace the 3rd edition with the 4th edition. I removed the 4th edn as the prescribed text as soon as possible, i.e. at the end of semester..
This is *not* a compendium of techniques and methods: it's a collection of philosophical and political manifestos.
Don't buy it unless you have an earlier edition because the authors frequently refer to the prior edition. Not for beginners. It is written to impress other scholars of qualitative inquiry.
Outstanding resource for doing qualitative research.
The 4th edition of this essential publication should provide plenty to debate in relation to the complex space of "qualitative research".This publication provides a wealth of resources, philosophies, methods, and perspectives. A wonderful companion for those on their own research journeys.Bravo
