Tremendous amount of historical information written in an engaging style. I only wish I had this BEFORE both my Camino's! It would have added a great deal to know these things. Many basics that even our guides did not tell us. Perhaps the guides need to read this too! Highly recommended for every pilgrim on the Camino and every lover of Medieval history.
This is a book oriented towards the lay readers as well as scholarship-interested, discriminating readers. It is beautifully illustrated (in the preface the authors are quite modest about the quality of the pictures), well organized and researched. I highly recommend this book for individuals interested in doing the Road to Santiago as well as veteran pilgrims alike.

This is a big book with lots of visuals. I consider it a valuable acquisition and a keeper for my collection.
Having walked over 5000km of St Jacques/Sant'Iago trails in France and Spain I absolutely love this book! When I walked from Paris to Spain many of the churches featured here were closed. Similarly on parts of the Arles and Aragones routes.I can imagine doing a road trip starting in Biarritz, up to Paris, across to Vezelay, down to Bergerac and across to Moissac, then up to Le Pluy-en-Velay and down to Arles, back to Biarritz - using this book as a guide to all the most important monuments on the four routes in France.
My wife and I are veterans of a number pilgrimage routes in Europe including the Jakobsweg in Switzerland and Austria and the Via Francigena in Italy. And of course the Camino de Santiago in Spain.This book is classic and recommended reading for anybody considering doing the Camino in Spain or any other pilgrim trail in Europe (there are over 200) who wants a deeper understanding of the history of medieval pilgrimages.
This book was assigned to me in a graduate course on Romanesque art and architecture along the Camino de Santiago. It was an amazing resource. It's written very clearly and concisely which helped supplement some of the more difficult academic texts in the course. I was actually excited when we had readings from this book! The images are truly incredible at illustrating the pilgrimage routes, a priceless resource for a student of art history. Ashley and Deegan did a wonderful job with this publication.
