Obama's Chief White House photographer, Pete Souza, just published a collection of wonderful Obama photos (over 300 of them) Obama: An Intimate Portrait and has selected some of them for this separate book for children. (Another lovely, inspirational book--for younger children--is by Malala Yousafzai, Malala's Magic Pencil ).Souza had unprecedented access to a president and often took hundreds of photos a day. He must have shared the best ones on Flickr and Instagram already, because most will be familiar if you followed his work there. However, seeing them printed and being able to hold and look at them--then seeing the entire narrative they create of a dignified and hard-working president (who is also the nation's first African American president)--makes it a great collection either for history or photography buffs or those who will enjoy remembering those (already) very different years. And, of course, this book is for children (obviously an essential for school libraries) and the photos will be unfamiliar to them---and fun to read and look at together. Each photo comes with a brief caption and comment. For many of us, looking backward with the larger book-- "Obama: An Intimate Portrait" -- will be bittersweet. That is less true with this book, which has far less photos, and a different tone. Although so much smaller, it is also a nice hardback with large format, full color photos on most pages It is only 94 pages, compared with the other book at 350 pages. But that book would overwhelm (even perhaps bore) many children whereas this one is easy to go through and holds interest. The subtitle gives the purpose of this oen "Photographs from Barack Obama's Inspiring and Historic Presidency". So, if you would like to inspire children with a look at a president who set a high standard for ethics and decency, this is an outstanding choice to give them.Politicians kissing babies was always such a cliché, but with Obama, his interaction with children was one of the most beautiful things that Souza's photos captured--and arguably also his best artistically. There are many of these in the larger book, too, but they are what is emphasized in this one and the impact of the President's warmth and rapport with young people almost overwhelms you, it jumps so powerfully from the page. This was a president who really loves children -- and their expressions while interacting with him are priceless. There is such honesty and naturalness in the interactions. (And of course, lovely photos with his own children as well). I think that's a great message for children "The President loves us!", apart from the other messages that are more formally presented with each section..The emphasis is on children, but there are other photos, too-- with the Pope and the Dalai Lama, working alone in the Oval Office, with his staff, hugging Biden, visiting the military. Not everything is upbeat-- like visiting a soldier in the hospital, a photo from Fergusson, consoling people after some of the nation's most traumatic shootings, . My only disappointment was how few there were from his trips abroad. I can think of at least a dozen that seem essential to include. But, for whatever reason, they're left out,, other than a photo here or there where the emphasis is on the personal interaction, not the famous place. (Although, in fairness, it does include one of my favorites--the family at breakfast in Moscow--and also a moving photo inside Nelson Mandela's cell in S. Africa.. Seeing the famous photo of the President and his national security team following the news about the mission to Pakistan to find bin Laden is so interesting in print and enlarged--the expressions of everyone in that room in that moment..For parents, this is a nice book to share with your children and an opportunity to discuss history with them. Not only the history that President Obama made with his two elections, but with photos as a springboard to the past--the President at the Martin Luther King memorial, on the Rosa Parks bus, crossing the Edmund Pettis Bridge, lighting the White House in rainbow colors for the Supreme Court decision on same-sex marriage, and congratulating the first Hispanic Supreme Court justice, Sonia Sotomayor. Many historic moments here, including his own inauguration. On a personal level, there are many different moods--from playing in the snow to consoling a family at Newtown--many photos with his own family and a few lovely moments with Michelle. Even a family photo with Bo and SunnyThere are a variety of people here--of ages, and races, and religion and even moods. That's refreshing, too. Each photo is captioned and grouped by a theme, centered around a value dear to President Obama:: "Be Kind and Respectful", "Work Hard", "Make Time for Family", Show Compassion", "Have Fun", "Dream Big Dreams". A bit pedestrian? Perhaps, but appropriate for children and they really do seem to encapsulate President Obama's attitude toward life. And suitable themes for a president who really did try to inspire us by example to be better individually--and to be a better, kinder nation. Those were the days.
Oh how I miss you President Obama. I miss your grace, your style, your sense of humor, your humanity. This wonderful book brings back memories of better days. Compassionate days filled with hope. Back when I was so very proud to be an American. When I was proud of my president. When my president inspired me to be a better person, a better American. I miss you Mr. Obama, I miss your gracious and generous wife and your lovely daughters. Be well Obama family. I'll sit here at smile at the photos of a Better America. A Better President. A brighter hope. Thank you Mr. Souza for sharing your talent and these phenomenal photos!
I bought this book for two young black male youths. I am white and all of the books that I searched to give these children positive messages. All fell short of my expectations. But this book is different. It is inspirational for all. As an adult, I enjoyed reading it as well. Beautiful photography and well written. Definitely recommend it for all children through adults. Inspirational.
A perfect book to kick off the new year. Inspirational and emotional look at Barack Obama’s eight years as president through the lens of his photographer Pete Souza. There are funny shots and heartbreaking shots. We see the playful, contemplative, hard working, respectful, kind, gentle, husband father and leader he was and is. My admiration for him as a human is huge and we were lucky to have him serve our country for eight years. Such a classy, intelligent, kind man.
Perfect book for my son. For anyone's child really. It allows your child to see how you can dream big and become anything you want in America if you work hard at it. It's a very diverse book and I love that about it. My son enjoyed all the pictures of inside the White house. I don't imagine we will be seeing anything like this while Mr. Trump is in office. President Obama and his wife really did show daily how much they cared about the children of America and around the world really. Empathy and selflessness. I have already bought multiple copies to give out as gifts to other kids besides my own.
In this world, at this time in history-this is one of the most beautiful books I have seen. It is well written with inspiring quotes to our younger readers. The pictures are beautiful and insightful-This would be a great Christmas Gift for anyone-- actually young readers and all readers in general-In fact, I just ordered 2 more as gifts!
Great collection of Souza's photos of Barack Obama! Since I wrote a children's book on Obama's childhood, I've been collecting every quality product I find on Obama, and this is certainly in that category.
My daughter loved this book, good inspiration for young kids and adults why not.
