#598 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

This was a good story, I really enjoyed it. But it ended so abruptly, so unexpectedly, I really thought I was missing part of the book. I kept going back thinking I had skipped some pages or something. This unresolved ending is what brought this down from a 4 star book to a 3. I was left feeling unsatisfied, and having way too many unanswered questions.

I tore through this book in only a few days. I stayed up way too late and read for way too long some nights, but it was worth it to get to the end of this. I had to find out the answers to all the building questions within the novel, and when I finally did get my answers, it was very satisfying. The book parallels the past and present. In the past, we have Sara, whose story is told in diary form. Occasionally it will be from another character’s perspective (her husband or child) in the past, but the past is mainly told from Sara’s point of view. She is a grieving mother who experiences tragedy and legends about her live on even in the present day. In the present day, we have a family who has been living in Sara’s old house, located near a wooded area that contains a landmark called The Devil's Hand. They remain largely off the grid. One day, Ruthie (daughter) arrives home and finds her mother has gone missing but her 6 year old sister is still in the house. The third sub-plot is with a woman named Katherine in present day. Her husband met with Ruthie’s mother the day he was involved in a car accident and passed away. Katherine is just looking for answers and becomes involved in the plot. The events occurring in present day are directly involved with the events of the past, as discussed in Sarah’s diary. The author does an amazing job of taking the story from the past to the present and back again without causing confusion. Each chapter draws you into the story a little bit more and leaves you with so many questions. This was the main reason I had such a hard time putting the book down, I just had to know why. When you do arrive at the conclusion, it’s a satisfying round up of the book. All the questions that had been building up throughout are answered, at least for me they were. There were times the book frightened me so much that I considered putting it in the freezer! In total, I felt a large range of emotions with this. It’s a thriller, a mystery, contains supernatural elements and Native American folklore, many genres in one.An excellent read and I would highly recommend it. It will draw you in immediately and you won’t be able to stop until you find out the conclusion to this intricate mystery.

The Winter PeopleRuthie lives in West Hall, Vermont under the Devil’s Hand, a legendary occult site. She lives in a house made infamous by the murders that happened in it. Not that Ruthie cares. All she wants is to go to a college far away. Then her mother disappears.Ruthie has to dig into mysteries long hidden as well as mysteries about her own parents while she takes care of her little sister. Soon she’s head-over-heels in conspiracies. She’s threatened and held at gunpoint and forced into old caves as the killers from the past seemingly return. This story is actually two-- one in current times and one from the long-ago past and both are riveting! The mysteries and the characters are complex and worth-reading about.

This book had been on my "to be read" pile for almost two years. Each time I saw the silvery-white mylar book cover, it seemed to blink at me,saying "You want me next. You really do." I ignored it. After all, books don't really talk! Well, do they? They do, and in this haunting, first-rate, ghost thriller, McMahon picks up the classical tools of the genre and combines them in a wholly new and unexpected way. McMahon wastes no time getting down to business. The suspense starts building on page one. By the middle of the book, it was nearly 2am, and several cups of coffee later, I felt like an overwound alarm clock. Just one more shock, one more revelation, and all my springs would come shooting out of my back, leaving me white-faced and unable to move. Yet even where most authors begin to "wind down the clock" McMahon pulls us mercilessly forward. Finding the truth of the book becomes as important as finding out out the secret contained in the diary of Sara Harrison Shea, the central character whose Aunt (referred to by many as "La Sorciere") practices witchcraft that is known all over the area for its ability to cure and ease pain. But she also can practice the darkest witchcraft of all, and the secret to this spell is one that many lose their lives to protect, and some, to destroy.I write this review after having turned the final page only a few minutes ago (it's 4 am now). The wind is humming its melancholy song as it rides over the corners of the house, the pines are swaying in that way that almost always presages a power outage, and I'm the only one awake. Well, there was that one moment when I shrieked so loudly my husband startled out of a deep slumber ready to call 911, but all is quiet now. I wonder, though, if I will ever be able to hear the sound of the cats scraping the closet door, or the racoons kicking up the leaves on the patio, without thinking about whether "a sleeper" has come to call. The best literature is the kind that you find yourself forced to live with, perhaps even live "through", well after you've finished the book. This is especially true of the most haunting examples of Ms.. McMahon's chosen genre -- examples are too numerous to discuss here. What's important to note, however, is that McMahon is not the latest in a series. She has blazed her own trail, deftly handling past and present in such a way that our suspense is constantly on the upswing, almost to the last page. Yet she is sensitive to the frustration that builds with suspense, so she leads us fearful and trembling readers to the next clue, the next revelation, just at the right moment to keep us keen for the ending. And oh, what an ending!I can't help but give this book my highest recommendation. I wouldn't dare do less. Who knows what other witchcraft McMahon has up her sleeves. Hee-hee. I can't wait to find out.
