Schiller is probably one of the best poets who ever lived. His plays are sublime as well. In America, very little is known of him; but, most people have heard of the play William Tell, which he wrote, and his soul-stirring "Ode to Joy" which concludes Beethoven's 9th symphony. His work on Aesthetics demands intense concentration, and I recommend using any German-speaking person, to help with the translation. I am currently reading this book, now for the 5th time, taking 3 chapters at a time (there are 27 chapters), and they increase in density of ideas as you go along. Schiller is probably one of the greatest psychoanalyst because he addresses and forces you to problems in your own mind, and helps you become what he calls: "A Beautiful Soul". I highly recommend this book, I just would like a better translation, because some of the ideas are not clear. I had the advantage of having an European friend who helped me walk through this, and I took copious notes in the book to help me in the other readings. Every time I read it, I get something different, new and profound. If you want to shape your soul and mind, I highly recommend this work.
Important in the field of aesthetics, however definitely not the most enjoyable if you're not in philosophy. Language can get complex and concepts can run broad. Otherwise, very interesting to read if you wish to look more into aesthetics and its ideologies.
It was 'Schiller. the life of a genius' which introduced me to Schiller as I was a little girl, and having read everything he wrote in German ever since, I was so pleased to see Schiller's letters and books available in English. I hope that a new generation will enjoy and respect this wonderful mind. His writings are relevant in our modern world more than ever. For many readers this book will be a real discovery.
