A stunning volume spanning centuries of beautiful books from all cultures. The well-known names of Durer, Dore, and Da Vinci are all represented along with numerous less-known and in some cases, unknown, illustrators and authors. However, as the title suggests, many of the books are included in this volume because of their historic importance. Books like Das Kapital, A Vindication of the Rights of Woman, and Einstein's General Theory of Relativity are also mentioned. The majority of books are from Western culture, but China, Egypt, Mexico, Israel, and Persia (and a few others) are also included. DK publishes some fine books and this one is no exception. If you collect books, this is a good one to add to your library.
Absolutely beautiful coffee table book and very interesting to read. You will pick it up then put it down and return to learn more when the mood hits. Very comprehensive about the history of many books. So much I didn't know and so much you will learn.

The electronic/digital medium has obvious advantages over hard copy print; and, ironically, has served both as friend and foe of the latter. But to this bibliophile, this title not only speaks volumes about its own historic titles but about actual hard copy, print-on-paper (papyrus, vellum, etc.) volumes in general—sensual artifacts that can be re-charged with the turn of a page; and that will always decorate one’s library and one’s mind more eloquently than the former.
