My book club had chosen Radium Girls, and when I mentioned that to my son, he knew this play, These Shining Lives. I ordered it as well as the book since I'm always interested in how the same story is told in different mediums. Little did I know that the author of Radium Girls, Kate Moore, actually learned about the young women who unwittingly destroyed their health and even lives when they used radium to paint dials on clocks and watches during WWI, when she directed the play. I don't know how often a play comes before a book, but it was an intriguing comparison.
I'm a new theater teacher at a private Christian school where it can be challenging to get good dramas approved for the stage, this one is perfect as it is historically based, artful, and easily edited to suit the standards of the school (with permission from the publishing company of course!)
I read this before watching my niece in the play, she was cast as Catherine, and they completed the play with only 6 characters. Truly an amazing play! The audience was so moved by the last half...important and relevant history for our times.
This is a good play for teens. Not only is the play itself well written, but it is based in an actual even which lends itself to reaearch for the actor and crew. Moments of humor along with the drama are nice. Can be staged in a number of ways. Also, the cast can be slightly increased so as to use more actors.
Exactly what we needed. Good price.
Fine quality script. Good story
Despite the comments by a critic in Milwaukee, I find the script to be lacking in dramatic tension or real truth. The characters are cliched and the story-line is so obvious that the audience will be way ahead of the characters. It's a sad and important tale, especially as a history of how American industry treated -- and probably still treats -- its most vulnerable workers. Unfortunately, the script doesn't measure up to the story it's trying to tell.
I bought this because a local university was doing this play, and I was in a "learning in retirement" class that the director was teaching to give us background on production. Reading the play before seeing it performed enhanced my experience of the performance.
