About the Author
Valerie Elliot Shepard is the only child of Jim and Elisabeth Elliot, missionaries to the Quichua and Auca Indians (now called "Waodani," which means "the people") of the Amazon Jungle. Her father Jim, along with four other men, was speared to death in 1956 as they sought to reach the Aucas with the Gospel. After Jim's death, Elisabeth and Valerie continued to live with the Quichuas until they were invited to live with the tribe that had killed Jim. They ministered to the Aucas for two years as Elisabeth and another missionary, Rachel Saint, learned to speak the language and shared the story of Jesus with them. Many Aucas converted to Christ as a result, abandoning their savage ways. Valerie returned with her mother to the U.S. in 1963, and has been married to Walter Shepard for 36 years. Walt and Valerie have eight children together, whom they have homeschooled, and lead active lives of Christian ministry. They currently reside in Southport, North Carolina.

Experience the missionary experience in Amazon jungle from a child's perspective. This is an excellent children's book written by Valerie Elliot Shepard, daughter of Jim & Elisabeth Elliot. She shares personal stories from her first seven years of life while living in the jungles of Ecuador where her parents believed God wanted them to be missionaries to Indians who had never heard of Jesus Christ. This book is well written with many details and beautiful colorful water color illustrations by Jim Howard. If you have been blessed by the writings of Elisabeth Elliot, you'll want to be sure and buy this!
A lovely gift to give to our friends who have young children and now live in Papua New Guinea.
Excellent! A winsomely written and true account eminently suitable for children but also for adults. I worked for a while in the area described and met some of the characters in the book. Valerie's uncle has beautifully illustrated the book.
Judging by the cover (you'd think a person would know better than to do that with a book!) I thought this would be for younger children. The reading level and general page-and-picture layout is better suited for older children. Young teens will also like it, until they hit that age where they think they're not supposed to be reading children's books. I thoroughly enjoyed it as an adult, and being a Wheaton grad and having heard this story often but not from Valerie's childhood perspective.
great true story!
I very much enjoyed from a child's perspective what it was like on the mission field. I teach elementary children at my church and many have been very excited to also read it. A very special family.
I didn't think my 6 year old son would enjoy this book that much once I received it in the mail. I thought it was over his head. But he surprised me! We ended up reading it in one sitting, which is over an hour, I believe! I would recommend it to families interested in missionary stories. I chose it because I read about Jim and Elizabeth Elliot over the years and wanted to hear their daughter's perspective. The artwork is colorful and attractive.
It's a lovely book! My grandchildren love it!
